BILL AND JOAN MUNROE MEMORIAL TROPHY
The Bill and Joan Munroe trophy is relatively new, first being given in 1997, the year Bill passed away. Munroe started playing lacrosse at the age of 10 and finished his playing career with the Victoria Shamrocks prior to embarking on a coaching career. He won the Minto Cup with the Jr. “A” McDonald’s Bread team in 1976 and coached the Senior Shamrocks to a Mann Cup in 1979. He also went to the Mann Cup with the New Westminster Salmonbellies in 1994 and 1995.
He was the coach of the North Shore Indians in 1997 and in fact had a fatal heart attack on the bench just after Curt Malawsky had scored a game-winning overtime goal for his team. He died on his way to the hospital on that July evening.
His mother Joan was a mainstay at lacrosse games for years, particularly the Jr. “A” games. She could usually be found in the penalty box, not being penalized but keeping score. Her flaming red hair made her instantly recognizable and she was one of the grand ladies of lacrosse. Joan passed away in 2003.
