ARCHIE BROWNING MEMORIAL TROPHY

Archie Browning was a famed member of the 1955 Mann Cup winning Victoria Shamrocks. He played alongside stars such as Tom Druce, Arnie Ferguson, Ralph Baker, Jack Northup, Whitey Severson, Jim ‘PeeWee’ Bradshaw and Jack Bionda among others. These names are well-known to long time Victoria lacrosse fans. The duo of Archie Browning and Whitey Severson was often referred to as the “Golddust Twins” for their blond hair. Browning was a member of the Esquimalt Police Force for many years and his legacy continues in Esquimalt in that the arena forming part of the Esquimalt Sports Centre bears his name. Archie’s widow, Betty continues to be a staunch supporter of lacrosse in Victoria to this day and their son Scott is well-known both as a player and probably moreso for his coaching role and participation in the Pacific Sport lacrosse program. For the 2005 season he has taken the reigns of the Intermediate “A” Shamrock team as the head coach. There is another Browning, Scott’s son Jonathan, coming up the pipe as well.
